CIC Award for Chemistry Education
Sponsored by the CIC Chemical Education Fund, the CIC Award for Chemistry Education is presented as a mark of recognition to a person who has made an outstanding contribution in Canada to education at the post-secondary level in the field of chemistry or chemical engineering. Prof Lucy will present an award lecture at the 100th Canadian Society for Chemistry Conference in Toronto, ON.
Dr. Charles (Chuck) Lucy is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta. Chuck is a passionate teacher who has taught classes of 400+ freshman students to discovery based graduate lectures. He was involved in development of a second-year research program and a course about careers in chemistry for which he has compiled resources on industrial chemistry and careers. But his primary teaching has been introductory analytical chemistry. He is a contributing author to Daniel Harris’s Quantitative Chemical Analysis, the most popular textbook in the field. Chuck is also a member of the Provost’s Digital Learning Committee which established a funding program for blended learning pilots at the University of Alberta.
Chuck has organized many W.E. Harris Teaching Workshops that bring instructors from across western Canada together to discuss the teaching of chemistry, and many chemistry education symposia at the CSC meetings, Pittcon and Pacifichem.
Chuck has previously received the Faculty of Science Teaching Innovation Award; the Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching; has been named a 3M National Teaching Fellow; and was recently inducted into the WACE Co-op Hall of Fame.
